Reckless Sat Nav Racers Put UK Drivers In Danger

In a dangerous new craze which is sweeping the nation, reckless motorists are gearing up to race their sat navs. Staggering new figures released today by Autoglass® show that four out of ten (40%) UK drivers admit to regularly exceeding the designated speed limit on our roads in an attempt to beat the estimated journey arrival time shown by their sat nav.

The leading automotive service company which polled 3,000 UK motorists also found that 10 per cent of those speeding have already received penalty points or a fine because of the dangerous sat nav challenge.
Almost three out of ten (26%) of young drivers aged 25 and under admit that they nearly always challenge themselves to beat the ETA time on the sat nav compared with only one in ten (10%) of motorists over the age of 25. Two out of ten (17%) 17- 18 year old drivers confessed that they have already received penalty points or a fine for being caught trying to out-do their estimated arrival time by speeding.

Men are much worse than women, with four out of ten (45%) male motorists confessing to challenging the sat nav compared with 30% of female drivers. Interestingly, a quarter (25%) of men admit they are more likely to try and beat the sat nav if they are alone in the vehicle than if they are accompanied by their partner.

Nigel Doggett, managing director of Autoglass®, says: “Exceeding the speed limit is a serious offence putting the driver and other motorists in extreme danger on our roads. A sat nav takes into consideration the speed limits on our roads when calculating a driver’s estimated journey arrival time and should be used only as a helpful navigation device. Safety for UK motorists on our roads is paramount.”

The top three UK cities and towns where this bizarre craze is most popular are Aberystwyth, Wolverhampton and London.

3. London 44%
4. Oxford 43%
5. Worcester 42%
6. Brighton and Hove 41%
7. Cambridge 40%
8. Liverpool 39%
9. Birmingham 37%
10. Leicester 35%
