Motorists Welcome Introduction Of Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Powered Cars Two out of three motorists would welcome the arrival of hydrogen fuel-cell powered on British roads according to the results of a new Motorpoint poll.

Some 70% of people quizzed by the car supermarket giant said they would seriously consider buying a hydrogen fuelled car when they become available. Over 1,900 people took part survey at www.motorpoint.co.uk

A two-seater hydrogen car is set to begin trials in Leicester in 2012. The city council has agreed to lease 30 cars to motorists under a 12-month pilot scheme also involving Leicester and De Montfort universities. The 350kg car is powered by a 6kW fuel cell and has a 240-mile range. If successful, the company behind the car, Riversimple, plans to produce 5,000 vehicles a year for the UK market.

Says David Shelton, Managing Director of Motorpoint: “Motorists are becoming increasingly conscious of fuel costs so it’s no surprise they are seriously considering alternative fuel methods. If the trials in Leicester are successful and production begins, don’t be surprised to see hydrogen cars on sale on a Motorpoint forecourt in the near future.”

Launched in April 1998, Motorpoint is officially the UK’s leading car supermarket, Motorpoint sold 44,000 cars and commercial vehicles last year.
